Elizabeth Louise "Betty" Benkert was born March 6, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan to Louis and Marie Stobbe. She departed this life and went to heaven on February 21, 2022. Betty met Charles Benkert in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and they were united in marriage on February 26, 1949. To this union 6 children were born. Betty was a loving wife and mother and dedicated her life to her family.
Charles and Betty moved their family to Kirkwood, Missouri in the 1960s and eventually started the Kirkwood Women's Track Club. Betty was a friend and a mentor to every girl that came through there. Running was a huge part of Betty's life. She was a pioneer in women's running in the St. Louis area and held many 50 and Over records in Cross Country and Track from the 1970s through the 1990s. She also competed in triathlons and ran marathons around St. Louis and around the country. She ran until she was in her 80s.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents Louis and Marie, her husband Charles, and her daughter-in-law Beth Benkert. She is survived by her sister Mary Bonness of Naples, Florida; her 6 children, Kathryn Benkert of West Plains, James Benkert of Mtn. Grove, Patrick (Louise) Benkert of Mtn. Grove, Jeanmarie (Charles) Luallen of Cabool, Richard (Renee) Benkert of St. Charles, and Charles (Colleen) Benkert Jr of St. Clair; and 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
