Emmett Paul Altis, 89 of Kansas City, MO was called home and ended his long battle with advanced Alzheimer's on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg, MO. He was born on August 28, 1925 in Cabool, MO the son of Paul A. and Rachel Esther (Bray) Altis.
Emmett was united in marriage to Alta Mae McGowen and to this union one daughter, Paula Ann was born. He joined the Coast Guard during WWII as the draft began after the family doctor recommended the Coast Guard as a safer alternative. His ship ended up being in direct enemy fire and he braved many battles on the water.
Emmett was a member of the IBEW 124 in Kansas City for 68 years and spent many years at Staco Electric. He was very active in his community and church; he was a member of the Ararat Shriner's in Kansas City, served on the Board of Trustees at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Kansas City for several years and served as a deacon and on the finance committee at Birchwood Baptist Church. He loved being a Baptist and offered volunteer hours regularly to the local Baptist district offices; the MO Baptist Children's Home, Birchwood Baptist and First Baptist of Lee's Summit, MO.
Emmett was a real estate agent and helped develop several subdivisions and was known for his handyman skills. He even built tree houses for his first born grandsons. He was a strong family man; God, his wife and family always came first and he always put others before himself.
Emmett is survived by his wife of 71 years, Alta Mae Altis and daughter, Paula Ann Altis Hawley. Emmett raised his firstborn granddaughter, Rachel Upp, like she was his own and always referred to her husband, Robbie as his grandson-in-law and their children, Paul Andrew Altis Upp, Daniel Harrison Upp and Mei Ling Magdalene "Maggie" Upp of Lee's Summit; granddaughter, Julie Christine Vandervoort and husband, Jason and son's Andrew and Alex of Lee's Summit; granddaughter, Nita Alta Mae Wagoner and husband, Ryan and children Hannah and Anthony of Georgia. Emmett also leaves behind a brother Hubert of Liberty, MO and a sister Fay of Oklahoma as well as many nieces and nephews .
