Obituary:
Evelyn Jane Austin Cox, daughter of Emmett and Minnie Wolf Austin was born east of Princeton, MO on Nov. 29, 1913 and went to be with our Lord in Heaven on Dec. 8, 2010 at the Kabul Nursing Home in Cabool, MO at the age of 97 years and 9 days. The following was written by Evelyn with a few additions by the family.
Evelyn was converted and became a member of the First Baptist Church of Princeton, MO when she was 18. She has expressed her hope that her family will join her in heaven.
In 1939, Evelyn met Orlie Cox and it was he who gave her the nickname "Jackie" as they played Chinese checkers. They were united in marriage on Jan. 11, 1941. They were married almost 43 years until his death in 1983.
She was a graduate of Princeton High School in 1932, a graduate of Trenton Junior College in 1938 and proudly received her B.A. degree at Parsons College, Fairfield, Iowa in 1963. Evelyn taught in elementary schools in Iowa, South Dakota and Missouri a total of 23 ½ years. She was a Retired Senior Volunteer at the Bethany, MO Senior Center for 10 years.
In 1994 she moved to Cabool, MO and stayed in her own home until 2005. She enjoyed crocheting and embroidery as well as quilting. When she moved to Landmark Villa in 2005 she enjoyed the activities there, especially Bingo, winning prizes to share with her great grandchildren. She became a resident of Kabul Nursing Home in December 2008.
Evelyn was proud of her teaching career which began in the one-room school house right after she graduated from high school. She also was proud of her family and gave them each her handiwork of quilts, pillow cases and potholders. Her favorite time was when she could have the family together and serve her always present Jell-O. Evelyn loved to fish in the farm pond with Orlie and the grandkids. Also, living at the farm brought gardening and the breaking of green beans before canning. She enjoyed making peanut butter fudge at Christmas time and sending and receiving Christmas cards.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orlie; a step son, Phillip Cox and sons-in-law, Bill Everett and Derald Carson. She is survived by three daughters, Mary Jane Carson of Panora, IA, Jo Anne Maugh of Rockwall, TX and Linda Everett of Cabool, MO; three grandchildren, Allen Carson and wife, Karla, Christine Hartley and husband, Wesley and Michael Everett and wife, Amy; five great grandchildren, Kaycee Carson, Kelsey Carson, Madilyn Hartley, Geoffrey Hartley and Tiffany Hartley; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
