Frances J. Whanger, born on December 14, 1953, in Phoenix, Arizona, the daughter of Raymond and Thelma (Gifford) Whanger. She passed away on May 10, 2026, in Springfield, Missouri. She was a cherished mother, sister, and friend whose life journey reflected both dedication and a diverse array of talents.
Her educational pursuits included attending Linwood/Bashor High School, from which she graduated before moving to Kansas City to attend cosmetology school, where she trained in hair cutting. Beyond her professional endeavors, Frances possessed a remarkable singing voice that left an impression on those around her and she could play the clarinet like nobody’s business.
Frances began her career as a restaurant manager in the fast-food industry, demonstrating leadership and commitment early on. Pursuing further education, she attended night school to study accounting, supplementing her skill set with knowledge she sought to expand. In addition to her roles in hospitality and academics, Frances held an insurance license for a period and engaged in selling insurance. She managed a daycare in Lawrence during her pregnancy with her daughter Steph.
Frances's family was central to her life. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Veronica Skelton and her husband Blane; Jessica Griffin; and Stephanie Griffin and her wife Kristin. Frances was also a devoted sister to Walter Whanger and his wife Linda; Charlie Whanger and his wife Nikki; Bruce Whanger and his wife Tamera; and Margaret Ingle and her husband Greg. Her legacy extends through six grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and fifteen nieces and nephews who treasure her memory.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Thelma as well as her brother Jim Whanger, whose memories she held dear. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
