Obituary:
Gerald "Jerry" Alvin Lewis was born Tuesday, August 25, 1942, at 3:48 p.m. at South San Francisco, California hospital. He departed this life on January 16, 2012, at West Vue Nursing Home in West Plains, Missouri. His parents were the late Othol E. and Edith L. Lewis of Cabool, Missouri.
At age 14 Jerry's life changed when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After several surgeries at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, he had to learn to walk and talk as he had done as a child. His mother saw to it that his legs were worked, each one, 100 times in the morning and 100 times in the evening.
Although his surgeries prevented Jerry from graduating with his class, he remained a faithful member of the Cabool High School class of 1960. He attended all of the class reunions that he was able to and loved to reminisce with his classmates.
Jerry loved his family and friends. In addition to his parents and two brothers, his family consisted of many nieces and nephews. Jerry was everyone's favorite uncle. The kids were his family and they all knew it.
A great achievement for Jerry was learning to drive. His first car was a Gremlin that he drove all over the surrounding area. In addition to driving his car, Jerry loved music and movies, especially science fiction.
Later in life Jerry took great care of his mother, allowing her to live at home as long as she could as she battled Parkinson's disease. After she moved to the nursing home Jerry went each morning and each afternoon to see her.
Jerry spent most of his adult life in Cabool.
He is survived by two brothers, Ronnie Lewis and wife Brenda of Belle, Missouri, and John Lewis and wife Deborah of West Plains, Missouri. Also surviving are his many nephews and nieces; his aunt, Marie Mitchem of Cabool; his uncle, Ray Lewis and wife Mildred of Eldon, Missouri; and a host of other family members and friends.
