Johnny Winston Wood, 86 of Cabool, MO passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at the Autumn Oaks Nursing Home in Mtn. Grove, MO. He was born on May 17, 1929 in Douglas County, MO the first child of Charles N. "Jack" and Eva B. (Lindesmith) Wood.
He was very mature for his young age, even driving a school bus transporting students to Mtn. Grove Schools at the age of 16. He moved with his family to California in 1946. He worked with his dad on a farm operated by an uncle near Burrell, CA and graduated from high school at Riverdale, CA.
Johnny was united in marriage to Imogene Odom on Dec. 8, 1947. They were married for 40 years and had one son, Charles Alvin. They lived in the Sanger-Dinuba, CA area and both worked in fruit packing plants, Johnny as a fruit inspector. He retired from the USDA as a supervisor after 33 years. Imogene fought a brave battle against cancer that caused her death on Christmas Day in 1987.
Johnny married Helen Faye Brents in Marrelton, AR on Aug. 5, 1989. They made their home in Cabool, MO and were married 25 years when Johnny again became a caregiver. He cared for Helen for two years in the home before she moved to Autumn Oaks Nursing Home where she is tenderly cared for. He visited her almost daily until his own health began to fail.
Johnny was a loving father, brother, uncle and friend. He was a longtime member of Cabool First Baptist Church and played many roles as deacon and Sunday school teacher. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Imogene; brother and sister-in-law, Russell and Joan Wood and brothers-in-law, LeRoy Jones and Bill Odom. He is survived by his wife, Helen; son, Charles Wood and wife, Janet of Clovis, CA; sisters, Joyce and Janice of Cabool, MO; sister-in-law, Irene Odom of Bakersfield, CA; brothers-in-law, Clay and Gary Odom of California and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by stepchildren, Marita, Diane and William; 4 step grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren and Helen's siblings and families.
