Obituary:

Ollie Marie Lewis Mitchem, age 93, of Cabool, Missouri, passed away on Monday August 21, 2017 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri after suffering a stroke a few days prior.

Marie was born on April 6, 1924 in Cabool, Missouri to Jim and Ollie (Miller) Lewis. She grew up in Cabool and was active in drum corps, choir, and cheerleading throughout high school, graduating with the class of 1942. After high school, she traveled to Chicago and San Francisco, later returning to Cabool.

On October 6, 1946 she married Sherman Arthur Mitchem of Cabool, and they were blessed with four children. After living in Garden Grove, California for a few years, they returned to Cabool. Marie was a devoted wife and mother, being active in her children's classrooms as a room mother, PTA president, Brownie Troop leader, and director of the Junior Choir at church. Sherman and Marie enjoyed many years of traveling throughout the United States while their children were growing up. After retirement, they spent fourteen winters in San Benito, Texas, and they were also active members of the Hillbilly Rollers Travel Club.

After Sherman passed in 2002, Marie stayed closer to home, but she still enjoyed an occasional trip with her family, including two Caribbean cruises and bus tours. She also found a special friend in Wayne Rust, until his passing in 2010.

Marie loved the Lord and loved life. She started her mornings reading the Bible and her devotions, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cabool. At the time of her passing, she was the oldest living member, having been a member for 81 years. She was a devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan, and kept up with their stats each season, even following them online when the games weren't televised. Marie was known for her deviled eggs and coleslaw, and every Christmas her grandchildren looked forward to receiving her incredible sugar cookies gifted in Pringles cans.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Sherman, her five siblings Othol Lewis, Ray Lewis, Elmon Lewis, Orba Ice, and Faye Hamilton, her special friend Wayne Rust, and many other relatives.

Marie is survived by her daughter Peggy and Dan Moss of Springfield, Missouri; son Steve and Patti Mitchem of Springfield, Missouri; son Jeff and Becky Mitchem of Highlandville, Missouri; daughter Janet and Brad Roberts of Cabool, Missouri; granddaughter Tara and Matt Glassgold of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; granddaughter Mindy and Michael Wiseman of Springfield, Missouri; granddaughter Erica and Jordan Rosenbaum of Battlefield, Missouri; grandson Caleb Rust of Nixa, Missouri; grandson Josh and Sherri Rust of Bellingham, Washington; grandson Tyler and Julie Mitchem of Battlefield, Missouri; granddaughter Erin Mitchem of Springfield, Missouri; granddaughter Kizzi Roberts of Cabool, Missouri; grandson Spencer Roberts of Springfield, Missouri; fifteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Marie was especially delighted with her newest great-granddaughter, and namesake, Charlotte Marie Mitchem born June 11, 2017.
