IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Theodocia “Doshie”
Brill
December 20, 1937 – November 3, 2024
Theodocia Whitaker was born to AD & Lottie (Stroud) Whitaker on December 20, 1937 in Soperton, GA. She was one of nine siblings, five girls and four boys. Her four sisters remained her best friends throughout the duration of her life. They loved traveling, spending time together, quilting projects and sharing endless laughs.
After graduating high school, Doshie enlisted in the Women's Army Corp in 1957. She proudly served at Fort McPherson, Georgia. The women she served with lovingly called her "Whit", short for Whitaker. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Nuel. He was an Non-commissioned officer at Fort Bragg, NC and his platoon was assigned a rotation at Fort McPherson. After a year and a half in the WAC, Doshie was discharged once she and Nuel wed on July 5, 1958. Her discharge papers list her as a stenographer. To this blessed union, four boys were born, John, Mike, Tim and Rob. Doshie would later joke about giving their boys "normal" names, as Doshie and Nuel are so unique. Along with the sons born to this union, Doshie also gained some special brother and sister in laws that she treasured.
While her enlisted time in the service had ended, her long career as a military wife and mother was just beginning. She manned the fires at home while her husband was in the Vietnam War and Korean Wars. They were stationed at many faraway places such as the Panama Canal Zone, Thailand, and Okinawa. Being a military wife was a great source of pride for Doshie. She loved her country and later served in many ways, such as being an election worker and being very active in the Ladies Auxiliary and the VFW. She immensely enjoyed acting as den mother while the boys were in the scouts.
Nuel, Doshie and their four boys returned to Cabool upon his retirement in the 1974. They enjoyed some quality family time living in a single wide trailer while building their forever home on EE highway. They welcomed their first grandchild in 1983. Doshie adored being a grandmother, and she was wonderful at it. She and Nuel were very active in the lives of all their grandchildren, attending many football games, cheer competitions, choir and band concerts, art shows, and more. They would have them at the farm as much as possible. Most importantly, she was the Shepard of her family. She made sure her kids and grandkids knew the Lord and would pray for them tirelessly. Church was nonnegotiable. If you were at the farm on Sunday, you were going to church. She loved singing in the choir, watching her grandkids in the junior choir, and leading Sunday school. She also had many lasting friendships within her church family.
Aside from Doshie's great love of God, family, and country, she had several other passions. She was an avid quilter. She could sew and stitch but had a great affinity for quilting. There was always a quilt in the frame. She was a talented craftsman, many people who knew her have a Doshie Brill quilt. Her family will treasure these mementos of her love and life. Doshie also enjoyed bowling. She was on a league for many years where she met some great friends and enjoyed fellowship.
Once Nuel and Doshie welcomed their first great grandchild, they became Nana & Papa. It was a sight to see. The way both of their faces lit up to be around family was really something special. That light in her eyes remained for her kids, grands, and greats until she left this earth. Towards the end of her journey on earth, she couldn't always remember your name, but she knew. She'd say, "I love you, but I'm not sure why." Her soul knew what her mind no longer did. She never forgot her best friend, Jesus. She never forgot how to pray. She even remembered some hymns until the very end and would have sing alongside her beloved daughter-in-law. But today, she remembers us all. She is reunited with her husband, her mother, two of her grandsons, and many other loved ones. Best of all she is with Jesus, with God, and at peace.
Doshie was preceded in death by her husband, Nuel; grandsons, Justin Brill and Christopher Brill; sister, Ruth Butler and her two brothers, Allen and Roger Whitaker. Doshie is survived by her four sons, John Brill (Julie), Mike (Troki), Tim Brill and Rob Brill (Libby); grandchildren, Heather Derra (Randy), Jennifer Vaughn (Rick), Sarah Khakayer (Michael), Dustin Brill (Brittany), Ashley Brill, Everett Brill, Megan Brill (Zach), Tamara Pexa (Shawn), Kaleb Simpson (Lorissa), David Harris, Jared Harris (Darcy) and Jon Harris (Nickie); twenty-eight great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren and her siblings, Betty Haggins, Arnold Whitaker, Kermit Whitaker, Katie Tucker and Judy Carroll.
